• Goal: saving weight of molds, increasing the complexity of molds, reducing the production time of molds,
• Approach: desk research, topological design, simulation, research into the compressive strength of hollow structures in mold parts
• Result: Design for a topologically optimized lightweight mold with a (theoretical) 37% lower weight than the conventional mold, the mold design also includes an improved cooling structure.
• Profit for the company: The research has confirmed suspicions that weight reduction and the application of complex cooling structures for a 3D printed mold is theoretically possible.
